Baccarat strategy: the method for disciplined play

Baccarat is one of the simplest but most misplayed games in the casino. Here's how to approach it with rigour.

🔄 Updated July 9, 2026

Baccarat is often considered a pure luck game — and that's partly true. Unlike blackjack, the player makes no decision on the cards. But there is one crucial decision: where to bet. And this decision has a real mathematical impact.

1.06%
House edge Banker
1.24%
House edge Player
14.4%
House edge Tie

Rule number 1: always bet Banker

The Banker bet has the lowest house edge (1.06%) thanks to its slightly favourable drawing rules. The 5% commission charged on Banker wins is already factored into this calculation — even with this commission, Banker remains the best bet.

Player is also acceptable (1.24%), but statistically less favourable. Tie should be avoided entirely — its 14.4% house edge is comparable to the worst slot machines.

Betting systems in baccarat

Flat betting (recommended)

The simplest and often most effective strategy: bet the same amount each round on Banker. No progression, no martingale. This minimises variance and extends your sessions.

Martingale

Double your bet after each loss. In theory, the first win recovers all losses. In practice, a streak of 7-8 consecutive losses (statistically possible) can exceed your table limits or bankroll.

Fibonacci

Progression based on the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...). Less aggressive than martingale but still risky on a bad run.

Our recommendation: avoid progressive systems. They don't change the mathematical house edge and create a false sense of control.

Classic mistakes

  • Following "roads": tracking previous results to predict future ones. Each round is independent — history has no predictive value.
  • Betting Tie regularly: even occasionally, this bet destroys your overall EV.
  • Increasing bets to recover: baccarat is a slow, repetitive game — discipline outweighs emotional recovery.
